Canopy for a children's bed

The tradition of closing the bed with a canopy and thus protecting your dream originated many centuries ago in the East, and subsequently became popular in Europe. Nowadays, it is rarely in which house you can find a draped bed, but the dream of a newborn child is still preserved, covering the bed with a light canopy.

The advantages of a canopy

The canopy over the crib has many useful functions that can ensure your baby's quiet, deep sleep. It is protected from bright sunlight, from dust and insects, from loud noises, drafts and prying eyes. The canopy gives the baby a sense of security, similar to what he felt while in his mother's womb. With it, the child will gradually, without sudden shocks, adapt to the surrounding world.

In addition, the canopy above the bed has an obvious aesthetic value, is an important element of the decor. It can be decorated not only in standard ways, but also show imagination - make hand embroidery, arrange with paper flowers, flags, silk ribbons.

Species

According to the method of attaching the canopies, they can be fixed on the bar at the head of the headboard or close the entire bed (more relevant for the smallest). The classical canopy fastens to four columns around a bed.

The length of the canopy is divided into short (up to the sides of the bed), medium length and floor. When choosing, it should be taken into account that a short canopy will not protect against drafts, and too long will not be very convenient to use.

By type of fabric canopies are light, made of natural cotton or gas fabric, and heavy, made of plush or velvet. Sometimes the curtains, like curtains, make double.

Material

Fabric for a canopy should meet not only aesthetic requirements, but also to be safe - hypoallergenic, sufficiently strong, hygroscopic. The ideal option is natural silk. The silk canopy perfectly lays down and drapes, it is heavy enough not to scatter, and light enough to allow the child to breathe freely, while not letting the sun's rays through.

If it is not possible to use silk, the most current option is chintz. A long canopy of chintz will look good, it is easy to care for, it will perfectly perform all the necessary functions.

A canopy made of gas, organza or tulle looks elegant and luxurious, but it does not protect the child from bright light and drafts.

The canopy of velvet, plush or brocade looks beautiful, but somewhat heavy in a crib. In addition, under it the child may be hot or too dark.

Do it yourself

The canopy for the crib can be made by hand, it will be cheaper than buying it in a store, and it will not take long. To do this, just follow a few simple steps.

  • Decide on the length of the future product and choose the method of attachment. The easiest way to mount - on the bar above the middle of the bed. Usually the bar is fixed at a height of 1.5-2 meters.
  • Attach a rope in the middle of the bar and hold it to the end of the bed, let it fall freely. Measure the length of the rope, and cut the fabric: two lengths of rope + 5 cm on the fold on each side + 4 cm on the bend of the rod + 3 cm on the drawstring, if the canopy is assembled. The width of the fabric should be 2-2.5 times the width of the bar.

Sew the canopy, install the bar, fasten the entire structure. To keep the fabric from falling off, the end of the bar can be decorated with a decorative element - a flower, a bow or a soft toy.

Instead of a straight barbell, you can purchase a special hoop, and assemble a canopy in the form of a cap. Mount not on the wall, but on the ceiling, using a hook. The only disadvantage of these structures is a strong fixation and the impossibility of simply changing the place of the bed.
